The remarks of Asst. Prof. Dr. Begüm Serim Yıldız, Chair of the Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling at TED University Faculty of Education, regarding the psychological effects of recent violent incidents in schools on children and young people were featured by Demirören News Agency.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Begüm Serim Yıldız stated that such incidents may psychologically affect not only students who are directly present in the environment where the incident occurs, but also children and young people who follow the developments through the media and social media. Emphasizing that adults’ attitudes play a determining role in how children make sense of this process, Yıldız noted that exposure to intense and unfiltered content may increase children’s feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty.

Yıldız underlined that repeatedly bringing up the same issue, changes in sleep patterns and attention span, withdrawal, or restless and reactive behaviors may be among children’s natural responses to an extraordinary situation.

Highlighting the importance of parents and educators creating space for children to express their emotions, listening to them without judgment, and providing age-appropriate, clear, and realistic explanations, Yıldız stated that limiting exposure to media and digital platforms and maintaining daily routines as much as possible help support children’s sense of security.

The news article emphasized that adults’ calm, consistent, and reassuring approach is critical in supporting children’s psychological resilience, and that professional support should be sought from school psychological counselors when necessary.
