As part of the TED University Student Development Seminars, the seminar titled “Not a Wound, but a Scar: The Story of Symbolic Loss,” delivered by Dr. Begüm Serim-Yıldız, Head of the Guidance and Psychological Counseling Division in the Department of Educational Sciences at TED University Faculty of Education, was successfully held with strong student participation.
During the seminar, Dr. Begüm Serim-Yıldız addressed the concept of symbolic loss from a psychological counseling perspective, offering a comprehensive discussion of the emotional, cognitive, and relational impacts of invisible losses encountered throughout individuals’ lives. The presentation emphasized the relationship between symbolic loss and grief processes, highlighting their role in fostering individual awareness.
Throughout the session, students had the opportunity to reflect on how not only tangible losses, but also life transitions, changing roles, unmet expectations, and shifts in relationships can leave lasting marks on individuals. Dr. Serim-Yıldız’s academically grounded yet practice-oriented approach provided participants with both theoretical depth and meaningful personal insight.
The seminar took place on Tuesday, December 9, between 16:00 and 17:00, at the TED University Multipurpose Hall, and was open to all students.
